What to expect
Several saltwater aquariums display Southern California sea creatures, including sharks, eels, octopi and crabs as they would appear in nature. Visitors can touch live animals in the tide pool “touch tank” (photo) and learn about the marine environment from modern, interactive exhibits, daily slide presentations and special events. Various weekend walks and children’s programs are available.
Things to look out for
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall, Exploration Center, Aquatic Nursery and Virginia Reid Moore Marine Research Library comprise a unique science education facility where visitors of all ages can pursue informal marine biology education, ecological awareness, and scientific research training. These complex topics are made fun and accessible by the creative and informative exhibits.
Helpful Tips
Cabrillo Beach Parking is $1 per hour and $9 max for cars. At the north end of the parking lot, there is a gate that leads to a boardwalk over a restored estuary salt marsh habitat that’s part of the aquarium. If you hit it at low tide, you can watch sharks and rays swimming by, and birds and crabs mucking around for something to eat. Ask the person at the aquarium entrance window for the keys to the gate. Bring a camera for photos! No eating is allowed in the aquarium but there’s a central courtyard for a picnic.
