What to expect

Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy, is a marvel of luxury, innovation and political intrigue. Restored to its former grandeur, this National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu tells of a time when their Majesty, King Kalakaua, built the palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its celebrated halls.

Today, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular living restorations in all of Polynesia and immerse yourself in Hawaii’s royal heritage. E komo mai! Welcome!

Things to look out for

Step back in time and immerse yourself in this incredible living restoration of one of Hawaii’s most iconic buildings, the Iolani Palace. This palace was home to Hawaii’s royal family from 1845 until 1893. Your visit will begin on the ground floor where you can marvel at the stunning Grand Hall and lavishly decorated Throne Room. Next, climb the majestic koa staircase to enter the private suites and Music Room, furnished with original artefacts recovered from across America. Finally, enter the fabled Imprisonment Room! It was here Queen Liliuokalani was held after the government was overthrown in 1893.

An introductory video “A King's Noble Vision” is shown every half-hour in the Iolani Barracks. Viewing of the film is free.
