One of Cape Town’s most significant attractions is Cape Town's Table Mountain. The locals are fond of their mountain backdrop and the rolling tablecloth of clouds appear over it at times. There is a legend that the clouds that pour over the mountain when the southeaster blows is the result of a smoking contest between the devil and a retired sea captain called Jan van Hunks. Cape Town's Table Mountain is actually 360 million years old and is actually older than the Himalayas and the Rocky Mountains. In 1929, the construction of a cableway began. Now it is one of Cape Town’s most popular tourist attractions and it provides an incredible view of the city and its surrounds. Since its construction, Table Mountain has seen 20 million visitors. The cableway journey takes about 5 minutes. Alternatively, you can choose to hike up to the 3,500 foot summit. There are 5 dams at the top of the mountain that make for a great picnic spot as well as shorter walks that you can do. You can also abseil 112 metres down a cliff.
