What to expect

Seasoned art fans and novices alike will love the National Gallery Singapore. The gallery is lauded throughout the art world as one of the best around. Truly the jewel in Singapore’s crown, the National Gallery Singapore houses an unparalleled collection of Southeast Asian art and has earned its place as a visual arts institution. The building itself is fabulous and grand in every way possible; from the architecture to the surrounding area. Visiting the National Gallery Singapore provides a brilliant insight into Singaporean culture, and you can learn all about the island’s unique heritage and history. Take a breath and drink in the gallery’s 8,000+ pieces of art, including important paintings and work by major Singaporean artists like Georgette Chen, Cheong Soo Pieng and Liu Kang. By far one of the biggest and best collections and representations of Singapore’s art history, take an afternoon to wander through the fascinating corridors depicting scenes of Singapore’s past and present.

Things to look out for

As well as the collection of memorable artwork by local Singaporean artists, it’s also worth checking out the staggering collection of works by other top Southeast Asian artists. These include the art of genre-defining Raden Saleh from Indonesia, Latiff Mohidin of Malaysia, Nguyen Gia Tri of Vietnam and Fernando Cueto Amorsolo of the Philippines.

Apart from appreciating art, you can also enjoy beautiful architecture and history at the gallery. The National Gallery Singapore is housed within the former Supreme Court and Old City Hall buildings. Features of note include the Holding Cells, the Chief Justice Court Room, Rotunda Library, Former Supreme Court Library, City Hall Chambers and an ornate Main Dome.

Helpful Tips

The gallery is the perfect place to dip in and out of, or spend an entire afternoon at! There are plenty of areas in and around the gallery that you can see using your general admission ticket, although special exhibitions will have an extra charge.

Kids will love the gallery too, there are a few rooms that they will particularly like: the rooms full of glowing lights, walk-on glass and sticky polka dots! At the end of your visit, don’t miss going up to the gallery’s rooftop where you can find a stunning view of the city.
