What to expect
From private garden during the week to public garden during the weekend, free of charge: absolute news for the era that has been handed down to the present day. Villa Borghese is the "Green Heart" of the city thanks to its plan, shaped like a heart: it became the heritage of the Italian State in the XX century. In this tour you will discover that the Park was in the past divided into 3 areas: “Recinto Oscuro” due to a dense wooded area; “Recinto delle Prospettive”, reserved area for the prince, renamed “Parco dei Daini” for the presence of deer, where periodically contemporary exhibitions are hosted; “Barco”, the largest that houses the “Laghetto” and il “Tempio di Esculapio”. You can admire “Loggia dei Vini”, a place where the prince organised lunches outside during the summer; il “Giardino dell’Uccelliera” (4 aviaries made of nets so that the birds seemed free); il Giardino della Rosa dei Venti; Piazza di Siena, in honour of the city of origin of the Borghese family; “La casina di Raffaello” used as a cloakroom; la Casina dell’Orologio.
Things to look out for
Walking in the park you will notice sculptures without a head: in the past it was a must have a head in the house! And lastly the Tempietto di Diana talking with the Tempio di Esculapio, in the middle of the little lake. You’ll find out the history of the Borghese Gallery that houses, from its inception, contemporary artists: this is the reason why inside we find the paintings of Caravaggio, the statues of Bernini and Canova ever since. We can consider it as the first museum of contemporary art. Next to the Borghese Gallery look at the “Giardino Segreto”, closed to the public and for this reason Hidden: il “Giardino dei Melangoli” a typical winter gardens. Relax in the park, let yourself be pampered by its timeless evergreen plants and trees and breathe history!
