What to expect

Australia is well-known for its whale watching season which runs from May until November. With Captain Cook you can experience these majestic Humpbacks and Southern Right Whales during their migration from the Antarctic Ocean to the warmer waters of Northern Queensland. See them make their journey south again with their calves. Enjoy an open water cruise through the entrance of Sydney Harbour with guided commentary so you can learn about the whales and their annual journey as well as other marine life. Captain Cook cruisers provide two decks, an open-air viewing area and a comfortable all-weather lounge for you to relax in while still offering superb viewing.

Things to look out for

Whales and dolphins often approach the cruise boats and your driver will slow down and stop in these cases so you can enjoy watching them up close, making this a very special experience. From a distance you may see whales breaching or tail slapping which can be a spectacular sight to capture on film.

Captain Cook Cruises has a 99% success rate and also offer a Whale Guarantee which means that in the event a whale has not been sighted, passengers can cruise again in the same season for free on stand-by basis.

Helpful Tips

We recommend you bring a jacket because it can be cool out on the water. A hat, sunscreen and drinking water is also recommended and don’t forget your camera to capture the experience! Light snacks and soft drinks are available for purchase on board. This is an open water cruise and you will experience sea motion, travel sickness tablets are more effective taken prior to the cruise.

Afternoon cruises operate daily and depart at 1.30pm. They return at 4.15pm. Morning cruises operate Saturday & Sunday ONLY and depart at 10.15am, returning at 1.00pm. Cruises are subject to cancellation due to weather and other operational requirements. Please phone +61-2-8062 3623 from 7:15am on the day of your cruise for the latest information. If your cruise is cancelled by the operator, passengers may rebook another Captain Cook Whale Watching Cruise in the same season.
