What to expect
Things to look out for
Aim to visit on a clear, sunny day so that visibility will be better.
Helpful Tips
Daytime Highlights tours run for 60 minutes. During school terms, tours only run on weekends. Tours are held regardless of the weather and if viewing through the telescopes is not possible due to sky conditions, other activities will be arranged.
A cold drinks machine with water and soft drinks is located outside the Observatory in the rear courtyard. There is also a water bubbler in the grounds of the Observatory. No food is sold at the Observatory and food may not be consumed within the building.
If you want to make the most of your time at The Rocks make sure to sign up for The Rocks Walking Tour to uncover the hidden stories of the historic and picturesque precinct.
How to get there
Sydney Observatory is located near The Rocks district. Wynyard Station and Circular Quay are the closest bus and train stations available. Alternatively, you could also take the ferry to Circular Quay and walk. For timetable information, you’ll want to visit Transport NSW.
Visitors using wheelchairs are able to access Sydney Observatory gardens, ground floor exhibitions and the East Dome Telescope. There is no wheelchair access to the North and South telescope domes due to narrow and steep staircases in the heritage-listed buildings. An outdoor telescope can be installed by prior arrangement. Toilets are located at the rear of the building and can be accessed from the grounds. There is a toilet which can accommodate a wheelchair.
