What to expect

A city within the city. The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, one of Europe’s most important Art Nouveau complexes, was designed by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and built between 1905 and 1930. It was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1997 for the singularity of its construction and its artistic beauty. Domènech designed a built space within the layout of the Eixample, turned through 45 degrees from the grid of city blocks designed by Ildefons Cerdà. This gave the space a perfect North-South orientation, providing better ventilation and more hours of daylight.

Things to look out for

Visiting this old Hospital you will discover one of the most emblematic works of Lluís Domènech i Montaner and, at the same time, explore the history of an institution with more than six centuries of history of caring for the sick and attending to people in need.

Helpful Tips

With buildings of great architectural value, grounds of over 27,000 square metres and a kilometre and of underground passages connecting the pavilions, Sant Pau is a true garden city.
